Campaign for Real Democracy
Under the mottled shell of the old tortoise beats the heart of a young dancer. She dreams of twirling on table-tops, turning cart-wheels, kicking up her heels at the carnival ball. ‘Oh who will kiss my cold and wrinkled lips, and set my dreaming spirit free?’
Monday 8th June CRD Meeting
A new group with working title Campaign for Real Democracy (CRD) will be holding its first meeting at 7pm on Monday June 8th in the Royal Festival Hall foyer. CRD’s basic aim is to build a strong network of people interested in direct democratic decision-making in their local area. Please note the CRD group is not affiliated to the work-in-progress ideas set out elsewhere in this blog. CRD is an new, non-aligned independent initiative. All we’ve agreed so far is:
“We are a group of grassroots activists, based in london who are looking to develop a new campaign for ‘real democracy’. What we mean by this is open, but three things we are agreed on are (1) the importance of local neighbourhood structures, (2) the use of consensus decision making and (3) the urgent priority that local democracy/neighbourhood defence groups join up to build a movement for democracy.”
So, do come to this meeting if the above appeals to you, or if:
1. You think there are a few people in your area who might want to run their own affairs in a really democratic way (for convenience we’re defining ‘local area’ using council wards - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wards_in_Greater_London
2 .You’ve experienced something you think is real democracy-in-action (in organisations like the climate camp) and want to see it spread
3. You’d like to see your area become democratic but don’t really know anyone else that thinks the same or even what real democracy might look like.
The meeting on 8th June will be held on the Level 2 of the RFH. Level 2 is the Bar and (statue of) Mandela level. We will aim for a table on the ‘Green Side’, just by the nearest entrance to the Mandela Statue. To let us know you’re coming, or for more info about the project, pls email crdlondon@gmail.com or simply show up on the 8th and look out for us. We’ll be near a blank, white placard so you can find us easily. Any problems, call 0785 439 0408.
Nearest tube/train: Waterloo, Embankment or Charing Cross
Hope to see you there!
Group members are also planning a Democracy Picnic for Saturday August 15th on Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath. More info to follow. Facebook group for picnic, here.
We’ve set up an e-list for planning, and the London meeting on 8th June is called to start bringing together the initial core team. To join the email/planning list, contact james@dogmanet.org
